Morning Hawk
A Cooper’s Hawk wakes me at dawn.
Her quick kak-kak calls to her mate.
She leaves the pine and comes to rest
In the ash, kak-kak kak-kak.
Beware, squirrels and mice!
Robins, hold your fledglings close!
Rooster crows a warning
By the light of a half moon
As the red-eyed accipiter invades prim
Yards of clipped grass and painted bird houses
In a quiet and terrible descent
