Golden Rain Tree

plot twist:

we don’t need maples here.

the loudmouth in the cul-de-sac

tosses pink confetti,

afterparty early.

she doesn’t whisper autumn

she shrieks it,

bouffant and lipstick,

shoving her way

into october’s photo shoot.

oaks mumble,

palms shrug,

st. augustine grass still wilts.

florida pretends

nothing is changing,

but everywhere,

things lean toward falling.

still though

she turns herself into autumn,

a stubborn blaze

while the rest of us

slip,

unseen,

into the Fall.
