a gilded view

the pollen on my windshield
is pale yellow-green
left over from the summer
never washed
despite recent rains

afternoon sunlight falls
on these failed remnants of genetic consolation
so that they gleam like dusted gold
and for a moment
the world outside
my aged
little car
seems to shimmer
